Feeding is another part you need to get right for an Axolotl.

This post will be controversial to some, but I will cover all aspects of the Axolotls care requirements.

                   3. Feeding amounts

                In my experience Axolotls will eat until they are full, with the babies I was feeding them 5 grams of blood worms every other day.  when i got the first two babies, (Bandit and Houdini) Bandit had a limb missing, this is generally due to being underfed and the Axi’s snapping at anything that moves.
                I increased the feeding amount in the tank allowing Bandit to regenerate his limb  quicker and perfectly (no defects).
                Unfortunately Houdini (known for his escapology prowess ) got “vanished” (presumably by Sebastian (Hrun/Nagini)). which meant all axis had to be fed at the same time (as at this point the babies were separated from the adult.

                I was feeding them 5g per baby and 10g for  the adult.
                this was done for 5 months.
                When I got Dig of the stump, again he had a limb missing due to under feeding by the owner of the Axi’s (due to bad instructions and not writing a care guide)..
                so, the Axis food was increased back up to 10g per Axi. Stig kept his head in the food every time it was put in.

            Due to the increase in food for the Axi’s their size quickly caught up with where they are supposed to be.

      I now feed them;

      1. 1. 15 grams frozen blood worms, every other day. (From here)
         2. Live shrimp (river or otherwise)- I am also looking at breeding shrimp for live feeding and cleaning the fishes Aquarium.
         3. “Safe” feeder fish (and others) as a supplement and a treat.
            • This also lets the Axis live as it would in the wild, as a predator.
            • I always have enough places for a fish to hide though giving it a fair chance of survival.
         4. Filleted fish  cut into tiny cubes, again as a treat. Literally 1cm by 1cm cubes

      Now the reason I say “safe fish” is due to the following feeding advice I found and it is totally unreliable.

      and is factually incorrect.

      Your axolotl will not lose Vitamin B if it eats from the unsafe column.

      What will happen is there will be no vitamin B in the Axi’s diet if it eats the “unsafe” fish. So, you cannot let it have a diet of (eat only) the “unsafe” fish. If you do, it needs a vitamin B supplement which defeats the object of feeding it said “unsafe” Fish!

      In an aquarium it is obviously restricted in that space and food falls where it floats too (unless it’s live)
